Our Merino Wool

As you already know, we here at Made In Roșia Montană are very passionate about the quality of our products, that’s why we chose Merino wool as our prime matter. We’ve shown you here a few of the benefits of wool which make it such a precious and luxurious fiber. But where does it come from?

Merino wool comes from a breed of sheep bearing the same name, which originated in Spain, but over time, has spread around the world. Australia and New Zealand are the most popular countries in which these sheep are bred.

At Made In Roșia Montană we are focusing a lot on protecting the environment, including on ethical exploitation of its resources. That is why we make sure that the wool we are using does not come from mistreated animals or irresponsible farmers.

An example of mistreatment of animals is mulesing. This practice emerged in Australia and was patented by John W. H. Mules. This procedure involves stripping with no anesthesia pieces of skin from the animals’ behids in order to prevent infestation by a parasite flies' larvae. Infestation of this parasite leads to a slow and painful death of the animal. Although the result of this procedure is in the end beneficial for the animal, it remains a cruel practice that we do not condone. Mulesing is a practice common and specific to Australia, it hasn’t been used in european countries.

Mulesing free is one of the criteria we demand from our wool supplier. The wool that we use to manufacture our products comes from Spain and Portugal, it’s spun and twisted by a Romanian wool processing factory with a lasting tradition in this business since 1936.

Merino wool comes to us with two certifications: Woolmark Pure New Wool și OEKO TEX Standard 100. What does it mean?

As we’ve said before, wool is a recyclable fiber and it can be reused almost indefinitely. The Pure New Wool label on a product tells you that it is made from pure new wool, also called virgin wool, wool that has not been reused or blended with other fibers like cotton, silk, polyester, etc. The Woolmark Pure New Wool logo is a guarantee that the prime matter used to manufacture the product respects the above mentioned criteria.

The OEKO TEX Standard 100 logo guarantees that every component of the product was tested for harmful substances and assures you that your product does not have substances that might endanger human health.

Now that you have all this information you can make a conscious decision next time you want to buy handmade Merino wool knitwear.
